Postdoctoral Program In General Practice Dentistry
Accreditation
The combined 52 week UK/VA General Practice Residency in Dentistry is accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation. The Commission is a
specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. The Commission on Dental Accreditation can be contacted at

Program Description
The residency is designed to extend the graduate's capability to perform all phases of general dentistry in either private practice or hospital
settings. Patients of all ages are treated with special emphasis on the medically compromised. Residents participate in general dentistry, oral
surgery, anesthesia, and emergency medicine rotations. Didactic and clinical experiences are available in the various dental specialties as well
as in intravenous sedation and comprehensive pain control. The program starts the first day of July. Nine residents are typically enrolled.
Program Goals
The primary goals of this advance education program are to prepare qualified dentists to:
1. Have knowledge and understanding of all aspects of contemporary general dentistry.
2. Have clinical skills and experience sufficient to assure excellence of care and health supervision for general dental patients, regardless of
medical or dental problems.
3. Have the knowledge and skills to perform dentistry in a hospital setting.
4. Have the knowledge and skill to request and interpret consults form other healthcare professionals regarding patients under their care.
5. Have the knowledge and skills to manage patients under conscious sedation (oral, inhalation, and intravenous).
6. Have the knowledge and skill to manage dental trauma and to know when and how to make an appropriate referral to specialists.
7. Maintain a cost effective program.
8. To understand all ramifications of the challenges that dentistry and other health sciences face in the future.
9. Be socially sensitive and to be an objective resource to the community of dentists and other health care providers.
10. Produce graduates that are pleased and satisfied with their education.
These goals and objectives met through continuous formal and informal faculty, resident, and staff interactions, feedback, and undated core didactic, clinical aspects of the program.
Rotations
Off-site rotations are available including those in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesia, and Medicine; St. Claire Medical Center, Menifee County
Dental Clinic, and the UK Dental Clinic in the Center for Rural Health at Hazard, Kentucky. See details on each rotation.
Admission/ Selection Criteria
Applicants must be graduates of a college of dentistry accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Selection criteria include academic performance
in their dental education, National Board scores, motivation and goals, letters of reference and interviews.
Stipend
A stipend is available to General Practice residents. It is established by the University Hospital and is the same for medical residents. See UK House staff

Faculty
Three UK general dentists serve as the full-time attending program faculty. Nine additional College of Dentistry faculty and V.A. staff dentists serve as full
and part-time faculty. Numerous other dentists and physicians participate in seminars and fulfill special program roles.
Facilities
Dental facilities are located in an 11 chair general dentistry clinic in a modern, primary care facility called the Kentucky Clinic situated in the Medical
Center and in dental clinics at the two Lexington Veterans Administration Hospitals.
Clinical/Research Activity
The General Practice Residency program has approximately 10,000 patient visits per year. There are opportunities for both clinical and non-clinical
research. While these are limited for first year residents, second year residents are encouraged to become involved in research.
