How to Apply

General Instructions: You are strongly encouraged to begin the Financial Aid process as soon as possible after January 1st of the year in which you will enroll.  Remember that if you wish to be considered for aid beyond the Direct Loans, you must include parent data on the application even though you are considered independent for financial aid purposes.  Encourage your parents to complete their federal tax returns early enough to meet the financial aid deadline dates.  If you must estimate to begin the application process, you may do so; however, you will be required to submit income tax information, as described in #5 below, to complete your file.

TEN STEPS TO RECEIVING YOUR FUNDS ON TIME

1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov or by paper form supplied upon request.  The priority deadline for submitting the FAFSA is April 15th of each year.  The proper Title IV school code of E00587 must be used.

2. Watch for the Student Aid Report (SAR), which may be received via mail or email.  This report is a compilation of information you submitted on the FAFSA and other important data. The College electronically receives the same data at the same time you receive the information.

3.  Read the printed message on the SAR and do exactly what it tells you to do.  Failure to follow the directions could cause a delay in your aid.  See #5-6 below if you have been selected for verification as indicated on the SAR.

4. If corrections or additions are to be made on the SAR, you may do so on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

5.  Income Tax Information: Signed photocopies of your and your spouse's federal income tax returns with all pages and schedules along with copies of W-2's are required if you are selected for verification as indicated on the SAR, or if you used estimated figures on the FAFSA.  Parents are required to submit signed photocopies of their taxes IF the information on the FAFSA was estimated OR if you have been selected for verification AND awarded school-managed funds.

6.  If you are selected for verification, a Verification Worksheet must accompany the copy of your tax form.  Worksheets are available from the financial aid office.  (See Verification.)

7. Prepare a personal budget.  This is an important step to help you know how much assistance you will need.  A written budget is also a proven tool to help you keep costs down while in dental school.  Guidance will be provided in the April mailing.

8.  Review, adjust (if necessary), and return the award notification you will receive around the third week of May. This letter will indicate the amount of aid you have been awarded from various sources. If the award is too high, you must decide which source to reduce.  If it's too low, the Financial Aid Coordinator will provide you with options for additional sources.  Sign and return the award notice to the financial aid office.

9. We will use the Federal Direct Loan Program product for applying and processing student loans.  In May you will be sent information about this process with your Financial Aid Award Letter.

Decisions regarding types and amounts of aid awarded from school-managed funds will be made by the Financial Aid Coordinator in accordance with the guidelines established by the various programs and in adherence to the policies and procedures established by the University of Kentucky.

Applicants wishing to appeal the amount of a financial aid award should submit comments in writing to the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs of the College of Dentistry for review.

Applying for financial aid through the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry financial aid office requires the annual submission of the FAFSA by April 15th of each year.  Failure to provide requested paperwork may delay the receipt of funds to cover your tuition bill, books, rent or other items for which financial aid is obtained.
