·         To advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health.

·         To support and represent the oral health research community.

·         To facilitate the communication and application of research findings.

How often does the SRG meet?

The SRG typically meets three to four times a year.  We meet twice in the fall and twice in the spring.  The first meeting is an introduction to research and research opportunities at the College.  The second meeting introduces dental students to faculty who perform research at the College, and reviews the deadline for applications and presentations (i.e. AADR abstract deadline).  Meeting three is typically in February in conjunction with College Research Day.  Typically five to ten students present their research findings orally and by poster on Research Day.  The fourth meeting is typically held between February and April to elect new officers, discuss research opportunities and formulate plans to recruit new members.

Why do research?

There are many benefits for performing research.  The benefits include the opportunity to: learn the scientific method and new, improve oral health and the application of dentistry, spend one on one time learning from faculty, present research at regional and national meetings, compete for science awards, and gain valuable experience that can help you get into advanced education programs.

What are the opportunities?

There are many opportunities to perform research both within the College walls and beyond.  Some of the opportunities are listed below:

FELLOWSHIPS

COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY OPPORTUNITY :

UKCD Student Research Fellowship:

These Fellowships are awarded to student dentists on a competitive basis by the Office of the Associate Dean for Research, College of Dentistry , University of Kentucky .  Proposals are to be written and submitted by student dentists.  Faculty mentors may assist and guide students in the preparation of the proposal, and must submit a cover memo assuming overall responsibility for the conduct of the Fellowship.  Proposals are no more than seven typed pages (double-spaced) in length.  Upon receipt of award, the student conducts the research project with a mentor throughout the school year.  The student is responsible for presenting this research in poster form at College Research Day in February, and at the annual AADR session.

Eligibility:  Students must be enrolled in the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry or be accepted for enrollment. Students should not have received their degree at the time of application or receipt of the award. Applicants may have an advanced degree in a basic science subject.

Deadline:  Usually April each year

Award:  Typically $1000

NATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:

AADR Student Research Fellowship

Proposals are sought in basic and clinical research related to oral health.  Each Fellowship (the number awarded is usually between 15 and 20; 19 were funded in 2007) consists of a stipend of $2,100, and each preceptor receives an award of $300 for supplies. Winners will be announced at the AADR Annual Meeting. Cash prizes will be issued no later than June, 2008.  Upon completion of the research (must be completed within two years), acceptance of an abstract and presentation at the annual meeting, each recipient will then be awarded funds ($600) for transportation and accommodation expenses. Recipients are required to present their research at the meeting, by submitting abstracts for poster or oral presentations.

Eligibility:  Students must be enrolled in an accredited DDS/DMD or hygiene program in a dental (health-associated) institution within the USA and must be sponsored by a faculty member at that institution. Students should not have received their degree, nor should they be due to receive their degree in the year of the award (2008). Applicants may have an advanced degree in a basic science subject.

Review:  The AADR Fellowships Committee will coordinate review of the proposals. Each proposal will be evaluated on its scientific merits in a manner similar to that used for NIDCR grants. Each reviewer will give a numerical rating to each proposal. The scores of all reviewers will then be averaged to give an overall priority score, which will be used as the basis for funding. Awards will be made on the basis of creativity of the project, its feasibility, and its potential significance to oral health research.

Proposal:  The proposals will follow the general format of the Public Health Service Grant Application Form PHS 398 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html), which is to be used only as a guideline.

Deadline: All materials must be received by January 14, 2008 .

Award:  $2100 + $600 for travel expenses

These include safety and training classes that are required by the University Health and Environmental Safety Office.  The classes typically required are as follows:

Bloodborne Pathogens (must take annually)

Chemical Hygiene Plan/Laboratory Safety

Hazardous Waste

Fire Extinguisher Use

Biological Safety Cabinets

Biological Safety
