¡Abra la Boca!
Opening one's mouth carries multiple meanings for student dentists. 'Open' is a simple request to gain access to a patient's oral cavity. Opening is also an act of trust on the part of the patient.
When a dentist attempts to communicate to patients with limited English proficiency, it's no small feat to 'open your mouth' and attempt to converse in a foreign language (be it Spanish or novice dental-speak). Invariably, any effort at bilingualism is very much appreciated and goes far in building a strong patient-caregiver relationship.
UKHDA, in welcome collaboration with UTHSCSA's Dr. Birgit Junfin Glass and her pocket edition of Vamos al Dentista, is pleased to offer an 'open your mouth' dental Spanish course. Downloadable copies of the classes are availabe at the right as both PDF handouts and PowerPoint presentations.
