Fourth year DMD student Matt Bright was awarded the Alumni Association Scholarship during Fall Symposium Weekend in October.
Leadership and community service are among the criteria for the Alumni Association Scholarship, and epitomize Matt’s dental school career. He knew he wanted to attend the UKCD after visiting one of the College’s Saturday Morning Clinics, which provide free dental care to underserved children in the Lexington community. Now the coordinator of the SMC, Matt hasn’t missed a clinic date in four years.
Matt will graduate in May 2014, and he’s currently interviewing for a residency program in Pediatric Dentistry. Years ago, he shadowed one of his cousins who is also a pediatric dentist, and he loved the friendly, fast-paced environment of his office.
When asked about the most difficult part of dental school, Matt cites balancing the coursework and lab schedule with his responsibilities as a husband and father. He has also found that dental school provided him with the unexpected opportunity to get involved in the things that are important to him. “No other student I know from another school can say that. Activities like the SMC, I get to do these things that I love, and serve kids. It’s been the most rewarding part.”
