Public Oral Health Education
I. Dental Health Education - Special Service Projects
The UK College of Dentistry as part of its public service programs conducts a variety of dental
health education activities, including support for school dental health education activities. These
activities include:
• Kentucky "Tooth Fairy Program"
• Kentucky Smile Curriculum
(with Kentucky Dental Health Coalition and State Oral Health Program)
• Dental Health Education Resource Library
(with Bluegrass Dental Society)
• Kentucky Oral Health Speakers Bureau and regional resource libraries
(with Kentucky Dental Health Coalition and State Oral Health Program)
II. Specialized Dental Consultation and Technical Assistance
Faculty in the Divisions of Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health at UK College of
Dentistry provide consultation and technical assistance related to maternal and child health in
several capacities:
• State Oral Health Program, Kentucky Department for Public Health
• Consultants, Commission on Special Health Care Needs
• Kentucky Children Health Insurance Program (KCHIP), Planning Committee
• Dental Clinical Consultations, Pediatric Cardiac Outreach Clinics (UK College of Medicine)
III. Kentucky Children's Oral Health Survey Special Service Project
The UK College of Dentistry provided project leadership for planning and conducting
an oral health survey of Kentucky's children (2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 15, years) that was
conducted in 2000.
IV. Kentucky Oral Health Surveillance System
Special Service Project
The UK College of Dentistry and the UK Center for Health Services Management and
Research are providing leadership for planning two state conferences and development of
an oral health surveillance system for Kentucky children.
V. Brush and Floss - Let Them Shine
Special Service Project at Lexington Children's Museum
Faculty and students from UK Collage of Dentistry help staff a special dental screening and
dental health education project organized by Bluegrass Dental Society to serve children in
six central Kentucky counties. In 1999, over one thousand children were served.
