Coronal Polishing for the Dental Auxiliary

Course Description

This eight-hour course will meet the educational requirements for certification for Kentucky and is designed to satisfy the Kentucky Board of Dentistry’s educational requirements for dental auxiliary personnel who will qualify for certification in coronal polishing under a dentist’s direct supervision {KRS 313.045(6)}.  This course consists of both didactic and practical components.

 

1.  Didactic: Lecture.  This will be verified by written exam per guidelines of the Kentucky Board of Dentistry.

2.  Practical: Pre-clinical.  This will be verified by faculty demonstrations and evaluation of participants at the teaching institution with follow-up per Section 5 of KRS 313.045(6).

3.  Practical: Clinical Component:  After completion of this course, participants are required to obtain 5 evaluations from their dentist and return to the continuing education office within 60 days from the date of course completion.  Once received, certificates will be issued to the participant.

 

In order to receive certification, participants must successfully complete and pass a multiple-choice examination and requires a 75% pass as well as in the pre-clinical and clinical portions.  Participants who successfully complete the examination and all required post-course requirements as mandated by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry will receive a Certificate of Completion as part of the required training in Coronal Polishing.   A one-year mandatory dental office experience is required within the last three years along with this course to qualify as a “Registered Dental Assistant”.

 

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of ethical and legal issues related to coronal polishing and the role of all members of the dental team
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of some introductory dental assisting principles including infection control, dental anatomy, and ergonomics
  • Identify the equipment, materials, and supplies needed for coronal polishing
  • Identify the potential risks and contraindications for coronal polishing
  • Demonstrate the preferred technique for coronal polishing
  • Recognize the proper positioning used/ergonomics
  • Demonstrate competency in performing coronal polishing in a preclinical setting
  • Successfully complete the multiple-choice examination for the course

 

Dental office experience is required along with this course to qualify as a “Registered Dental Assistant”.
