Management of Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office

Course Description

How well prepared are you and your office staff for medical emergencies?  This three-hour course is designed to satisfy the Kentucky state requirement regarding “the identification and prevention of potential medical emergencies”, as required for dental hygienists to work under general supervision.  Commonly encountered medical emergencies are addressed.  Topics will include syncope, hypotension, aspiration of foreign object, allergic reactions, hypertension, diabetic reactions, seizure disorder , and cardiac emergencies, as well as the medical history, including ASA classifications of physical status. Emphasis is placed on the immediate, non-pharmacological aspects of care.   

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, each participant should be able to succeed at the following tasks:

  • Review basic principles of reducing risk factors, identifying signs and symptoms which may be manifest during a dental appointment and take appropriate preventive measures for selected emergency situations
  • Discuss related legal issues associated with medical emergencies
  • Discuss and recognize early warning signs of a variety of potential medical emergencies
  • Learn what should be included in your basic emergency kit
