Associated with the UK strategy to increase it's national research competitiveness, the concept of "Critical Success Factors" (CSF) was developed. One of the CSF is that
"By 2003, the College of Dentistry will develop an infrastructure that will support a Top Twenty research
program". To succeed in this endeavor, two objectives were developed.
Develop a Center for Oral Health Research (COHR) that supports multidisciplinary basic, applied,
clinical, and epidemiological research.
Recruit and retain faculty who have both clinical and research training.
In this regard, the COHR has been created and I am proud to be it's initial Director. Tonya Simon has also "come aboard" as the Administrative Officer and "jack-of-all-trades" for the COHR. Importantly, we are committed that the COHR will support a broad array of research interests by the faculty of the UKCD. In this manner, the COHR will be able to not only provide an infrastructure, but be able to directly contribute to recruiting and retaining the best faculty.
Future topics under this Web page will include:
highlighting various research activities of the COHR
updates of various targeted research initiatives being
undertaken by the COHR
recruiting activities targeted to research
the COHR's role in graduate research activities at both the pre- and post-doctoral levels
interfacing the COHR's mission with the university and
The COHR Web pages will also provide a venue for acknowledging successful grant applications and publications of COHR faculty.
Although I have been at UKCD for only a short time, I can't think of a more exciting environment with strong administrative support and a clear faculty commitment to take UKCD to the next level of research success.
