Our overall focus is studying the oral cavity as a source of infection and inflammation that may have an impact on other areas of the body, other medical conditions, and the aging process. In addition, we are developing new ways of treating oral infection and inflammation that may be more cost effective than traditional surgical therapy and, for some patients, more long lasting.
Current areas of interest include:
The effects of periodontal therapy on pre-term birth (University of Kentucky PI, NIH/NIDCR multicenter study)
The effects of aging on oral infection, inflammation and disease (PI, NIH/NIA study)
The
use of host modulation in the treatment of periodontal
disease [PI, FDA Phase IV multicenter study for the use of
subantimicrobial doxycycline (Periostat; CollaGenex
Pharmaceuticals) combined with Atrisorb and scaling and
root planing in
the treatment of periodontal disease]
The
use of host modulation in the treatment of periodontal
disease [PI, FDA Phase III multicenter study for the use
of single
daily dose of subantimicrobial doxycycline (Periostat;
CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals) combined with scaling and root
planing in
the treatment of periodontal disease]
