Do you have an interest in science and math? If so, you should consider the Clinical
Laboraotory Sciences program at the University of Kentucky. Clinical
Laboratory scientists (CLS) perform, develop, evaluate, correlate, and assure accuracy and validity of laboratory information. They play a key role in the healthcare team by providing lab results that help in the diagnosis and management of disease. The clinical laboratory professional has diverse and multi-level functions in the area of analysis and clinical decision-making, information management, regulatory compliance, education, and quality assurance. A CRS graduate can work in a variety of settings including clinical laboratories, research laboratories, industry, or in the field of education.
Clinical Laboratory Scientists must possess good communication skills. You will be an important member of the team providing healthcare and will interact with physicians, nurses, patients, and other members in the laboratory. Graduates of
CLS programs will often have management responsibilities. Many may specialize in areas in the clinical laboratory such as hematology, clinical chemistry, toxicology, virology, microbiology, or immunohematology (blood banking).
The CLS curriculum prepares you to take national certification exams. The curriculum also offers a good foundation for medical school, dental school, veterinary school, and graduate school.
The University of Kentucky offers a bachelor of health science degree in Clinical
Laboratory Sciences (CLS) that is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), 8410 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60631; 773.714.8880.
The 10-month program is offered on the Lexington campus of the University of Kentucky and encompasses the 4th year of study in the baccalaureate degree program. The program provides sequential instruction in laboratory medicine for the student who has been well prepared in science and mathematics during the first 3 years of study at the university. Through lecture, laboratory, demonstrations and clinical practica, students are prepared for clinical practice in the modern, automated laboratory. Graduates are eligible to take national certification examinations as Clinical Laboratory Scientists/Medical Technologists.
Opportunities exist for the student who wishes to complete clinical practice in rural Kentucky sites.
