Good health begins early!
In order to make children healthier, the Southeast Kentucky AHEC offers
health programs, planned and taught by experienced educators, to schools, family resource
centers, and day care centers in southeastern Kentucky. The programs are available
at no cost. Programs currently available are listed below, and program on other
topics may be developed by special request. For more information or to schedule a

» AIDS
Grades 7-12, Individual Classes
This class provides a
comprehensive understanding of HIV/AIDS, including its origin, how it attacks the immune
system, and how it is transmitted. Students will learn how to avoid AIDS, and
recognize symptoms of the disease. An informative classroom exercise illustrates how
AIDS can spread through a population

Anger Management
Grades 5-12, Individual Classes
This program deals with
ways to control anger, identify anger triggers, the different types
of anger and how to respond appropriately.

Asthma
Grades Preschool - 8, Individual Classes
This class deals with the number one reason children
miss school. The class will deal with understanding asthma, knowing signs and symptoms,
recognizing triggers and how to avoid them, understanding the need for controller and
rescue medications, and how to exercise safely.

Career Guidance
Grades 4-12, Individual Classes
Programs to educate students about the opportunities
in health careers are available. Programs will emphasize the variety of health careers
available, preparation for a health career, personal attributes required for a health
career, and schools and colleges in Kentucky which offer health career degrees. The job
outlooks and pay levels for each health profession represented. A variety of handouts and
videos are used in the classroom presentations.

Career Guidance Puppets
Grades
Preschool - 3, Individual Classes
This program will educate
younger children about health careers with the use of puppets and a video presentation.

Conflict Resolution
Grades
4-7, Individual Classes
This class represents the
skills needed to get along well with others, working out conflicts peacefully and fairly,
and making and keeping friends. Students learn to identify sources of stress, and
constructive ways of dealing with stress and frustration. Positive communication skills
are emphasized.

Drinking
& Driving
Grades
9-12, General Assemblies
The emergency nurses,
paramedics, and EMTs who make up the UK Trauma Team graphically convey the consequences of
drinking and driving. The team uses slides and videotapes of crash scenes and crash
victims in their presentation. Local residents who have been seriously injured by crashes
describe their injuries, and the lasting affect on their lives. This program is usually
scheduled during the spring prom season.

Wheeler & Motorcycle Safety

Grades
5-8, Individual Classes
Riding four-wheelers is a
popular recreational activity for area students, but most riders do not use basic safety
precautions. This program focuses on the essentials of safe riding and the necessity
for using safety equipment. Safety handouts and a video produced by Honda are part
of the presentation.

Good Touch - Bad Touch
Grades K-4, Individual Classes
This class about sexual abuse
teaches students the difference between good touches and bad touches, and how to prevent
bad touches from happening. Students learn about options when bad touches occur. A
teaching video featuring puppets is used in the presentation.

Personal Hygiene
Grades 3-9, Individual Classes
The basics of bodily
cleanliness and hygiene, including head lice prevention and treatment, are discussed. Hair
care, skin care, and the relationship of cleanliness to good health are stressed.

Nutrition
Grades K-12, Individual Classes
This basics of good
nutrition, making healthy food choices, and the relationship between food and health are
taught using food models, puppets and handouts. The best type of fast food and health
snacks are reviewed. Content is age and grade appropriate.

Tobacco Education
Grades
K-12, Individual Classes
The facts about tobacco use
and the harm it causes are presented in videos, handouts, and with models such as
"Mr. Gross Mouth." The content is age and grade appropriate.

Tattoo and Body Piercing
Grades
7-12, Individual Classes
This program will educate
students on: the health issues associated with tattoos/body piercings, the social issues
associated with tattoos/body piercings, medical complications that could arise from
receiving a tattoo or body piercing.

Tooth
Care
Grades 4-8, Individual Classes
This class teaches the basics
of dental care, including how to brush and floss and when to visit the dentist. The
dangers of chewing tobacco and a high sugar diet are emphasized. Younger students
will receive a visit from the Tooth Fairy to explain good dental hygiene.
